It’ll Keep (procrastination poem #3,339)

I said each day I’d write myself a short, amusing poem
Today’s the day and so, of course, I’m never getting going
I’m looking through old photos, I’m surfing on the web
I’m eating all the biscuits, I’m boiling twenty eggs
I’m dusting all the corners, and sweeping all the floors
And when that’s done I’ll exercise, and then I’ll make some s’mores
By the time I’ve got a moment to pull out my pen and write
I look outside the window and see day has turned to night
I cannot write at night-time because that’s when I count sheep
I guess today’s amusing poem will be tomorrow’s, it’ll keep.

I like a good procrastination poem, they often surface in these cold winter months, when I’m struggling to keep momentum. This is the time of year when I’d like to curl up in front of the fire each day with a good book, or wrap up and take long lingering walks through the Autumn leaves. I find my eyes drifting away from my computer screen and out of the window, watching the golden sunlight filter through the trees as the squirrels play chase through the branches.

The distracting view in my lovely office

I’m trying small writing goals at the moment, because lofty ones seem so out of reach they put the kybosh on creativity. I’m starting with a little rhyme every day. I doubt I’ll post all of them as I don’t want to drive you lovely readers away with my silly stanzas, but I’ll keep checking in with the odd rhyme, if only to give myself some accountability.

Do you find your momentum waning at the time of year? Do you think it’s a natural part of the winter process? What might life look like in Western civilisations if our systems allowed time for us to slow down in the winter months?

  1. Rae, I LOVE this poem! It brightened my day! As someone who draws and sews, I often go through times of procrastination or lack of motivation. At least you got a lot of other stuff done!! 😊 Boiling 20 eggs is an accomplishment in my book!

  2. Thank you for validating procrastination so beautifully! It’s one of my fave pastimes. I’m still lying in bed at 9am (when I should be out running), reading delightful blogs like this one. I also recommend “Death & Birds” by Chloe Hope on Substack. Yesterday’s is particularly moving. I think procrastination means we get other things done and are perhaps better following our heart and our intuition. Happy procrastination! 😘

    • Thanks Melanie, you always put s good spin on things. I shall look up that Substack. Maybe if we renamed procrastination it wouldn’t sound so unproductive, after all, as Michelle pointed out in her comment we’re still getting stuff done (just not the thing we have in mind 🤣) Following our heart and intuition like you say is always a good bet 😚

  3. Do you find your momentum waning at the time of year? No I find this time of year, autumn, invigorating. After the hot & humid summer I’m ready to get things done in anticipation of a long winter.

Do you think it’s a natural part of the winter process? I think it is natural for me to slow down during Jan/Feb.

What might life look like in Western civilisations if our systems allowed time for us to slow down in the winter months? I’d say we’d be better people, more respectful of each other and the beauty of nature.
