A Story of Hope: white bison born in Yellowstone Park

I very seldom read the news, but the headline of a white bison born in Yellowstone National Park and its significance for Native American tribes grabbed me. I’ve been interested in Native American wisdom since I was a child. My Dad had a framed picture of a Native American Indian and a wise proverb underneath. I’d often read it when I walked up or down the stairs, the words felt true to me. The picture later ended up in my teenage bedroom, along with some skin drums and other intriguing artefacts and a necklace in the Native American style which I Ioved, loved, loved, and which got lost somewhere along the path of life. We ditched the drums because I didn’t want roommates and something was definitely living in them, and a bedroom re-decoration took place when I went to University. My Dad usually keeps everything, but I’ve never have been able to find that picture again, and I can’t quite remember the quote.

Childhood fascination aside, I was delighted this morning to open BBC news to the headline, Native American’s see omen in Yellowstone’s rare white bison. Apparently, the birth of this calf holds spiritual significance for many Native American tribes that would be akin to the return of Jesus for Christians. The story of the white buffalo woman, a prophet amongst many Native American Tribes, tells of a beautiful woman who bequeathed a sacred pipe and bundle to the people of the Lakota tribe. The birth of the white calf signifies that a great change is coming. Chief Arvol Looking Horse, 19th keeper of the White Buffalo Calf Woman Pipe and Bundle, said ‘we must do more’ to protect the earth and its animals.

In the meantime, I shall leave you with feelings of hope (I hope) and this quote, which speaks to my heart.

This we know: the earth does not belong to man, man belongs to the earth. All things are connected, like the blood that unites us all. Man did not weave the web of life, he is merely a strand in it. Whatever he does to the web, he does to himself.

  1. I saw that news article, too, and it made me happy. Refreshing to see a news story that wasn’t filled with vitriol.

What were you fascinated by in your childhood? I was amazed by the science of baking, how ingredients went together, how substances caused cake or bread to rise, how sugar + butter could chemically combine to make something tasty, and so on. 🍰

Do you believe that nature can give us signs? Yes definitely, but only to those people who are willing to notice and accept the signs.

  3. Rae, thank you for bringing this to my attention… I’m traveling in France at the moment so I’ve not had a lot of free time but for some unknown reason the image of this white bison calf has kept coming back into my mind. I don’t know the significance but I’m game for the mystery. Also, I love the Chief Seattle quote. We are all connected, and that makes me happy. 😘
