S’mother’s Day

I’m a Mum on Mother’s Day
Wondering why I feel this way
Why does a day that’s all for me
Constrict me so uncomfortably?
There’s cards and pressies, hugs and kissing
Why do I feel there’s something missing?
Shouldn’t I just accept the praise
heaped on me and demand a raise
For taking care of these kids of mine?
Yet here’s the problem, clear as shine:
These kids are mine, I don’t need thanks
For washing all their underpants
As much as I might seethe and mumble
It’s Mum’s prerogative to grumble
It doesn’t mean I need a day
With enforced thank you’s sent my way
Costly cards and overpriced flowers
Dinners that go on for hours
It’s rather stifling, you see
the expectation of a day for me
The thing I’d like most as a Mum
Is more time spent with my loved ones
And some alone that's just for me
which fills my bucket (and it' free)
And knowing when all’s said and done
They don’t have to thank me, I’m their Mum

Happy Mother’s Day to all the Mum’s out there. However your day goes, you’re doing an amazing job every day just by being you.

  1. This is great, Rae! I’m not a big fan of Mother’s Day… it’s so commercial and somehow, as you wrote so well, always feels a bit forced and artificial. My fave line: “These kids are mine, I don’t need thanks
For washing all their underpants.”🤣 As cliché as it sounds, Mother’s Day is every day. So happy mother’s day today and tomorrow!

  2. This is such a lovely poem, Rae! It seems like Mother’s Day is a day of mixed feelings in so many ways. It’s a contrived, commercial day that thrives on feelings of guilt and obligation. And then, it becomes a day of deep sadness when mother has passed away. And yet…it’s good for kids to learn to show appreciation for the important people in their lives, starting with their mother!
