I’m stuck in a drudge
Wading through sludge
Coaxing my feet
But they’re playing hard to budge
My tail is in front and then it’s behind
I can’t seem to catch it (God knows I’ve tried)
This trudging and grasping and spinning’s a chore
I’m not really sure I can take any more…
But then…
I take a deep breath
Expanse in my chest
Mud washes away
In a downpour of rest
Shoulders relax
Tension released
Each breath in and out
Brings me more peace
I sit down where I am
Drink in the world
Feel the bright of the button
I was as a girl
I remember I’m here
And I’m all I need be
I remember that’s fine
And now I am free

Thanks for joining me for my first Sunday rhyme time of the year. Do you ever get that feeling of being stuck, like you’re chasing your tail? Mind racing with lists, worries, judgements or he-said/she said? In moments like this I like to put my hand on my heart and breathe, it helps calm my mind and re-connect me to my heart, which is the place I like to be.
Breathing in, I feel myself as a mountain.
Thich Nhat Hanh
Breathing out, I feel solid.
Breathing in, I see myself as water.
Breathing out, I reflect things as they are.
Breathing in, I see myself as space.
Breathing out, I feel free.

Oh my gosh I love TNH so much and I’ve not seen that exact quote before. I’m currently reading his book, “You are Here.” It’s so lovely to start my day with his sweet words (and yours!) and a reminder to breathe in freedom and beauty.
What a great first rhyme time of the new year! Welcome home!
Your rhyming is like an enlightened Dr. Seuss! That first verse could be playfully illustrated! All of it, actually.
I also adore this line, “Feel the bright of the button I was as a girl.” So original and creative and evocative!
Also it’s amazing how when you write, “Shoulders relaxed, tension released,”my body does exactly that.
And beautiful photos you’ve chosen.
Thanks, Rae! I’ve missed you!

And I’ve missed the smile you put on my face with your lovely, kind words ☺️
To be likened to Dr Seuss is a compliment of the highest order!
I’d love to illustrate my poems, first I need to learn how to draw 🫣. I’m trying to coax my daughter into doing it but she’s far too busy with her own wonderful creations at the moment 🤣
That line about the button is my fave too, I honestly don’t know where those ones come from (doesn’t feel like me, more through me?)
I’d not come across that quote before either but what a wise man, I love how his words take me right into that place of breath and stillness, I haven’t read that book either so I will add it to my list.
Thanks Melanie ☺️

Rae, this poem really nails what it’s like when life throws you curveballs! It’s like, you’re stuck in this rut, battling through all these obstacles, but then, boom! You find that inner peace, and suddenly everything feels lighter. It’s like hitting the reset button and realizing you’ve got everything you need right there inside you. So relatable and totally uplifting.

The present moment is often a moment of peace, it’s a shame we are so rarely there 😅. I love your poem, Rae. It really captures that frantic feeling of trying and trying and then that release into the present moment and simply being.

It is a shame isn’t it? So glad you liked the poem, it’s an experience I have often, though like you wish I could spend more time in the state at the end of the poem! ☺️
