Red kite took flight to the highest of heights
Her heart filled with awe at the wondrous sights
Spread out below her, a patchwork of green
Thumbnails of oak twined with
ribbons of streams
Rivers and waterfalls frozen in place
She breathed in the stillness and breathed out more space
The worries that gripped her when talons touched ground
Couldn’t find any purchase with beauty around
As dusk gathered light she returned to the nest
Renewed and restored by her long flight of rest
The peace that had filled her when she wheeled up above
Settled into her heart and expanded to love
She gazed at her mate and their chicks sleeping tight
And somehow she knew it would all be alright

I’ve been visiting the family in sunny Wales where red kites abound, I’m missing their piercing cry and graceful beauty already. Red kites are monogamous and in breeding season once they’ve built their nest they decorate it with bright things. Crisp packets, handbags and knickers have all been found in red kite nests! I love that decor is their final flourish to their home before the chicks arrive.
In this week’s Sunday rhyme, Red Kite kite finds her peace in beauty and space, where do you find your peace?
I’m thinking I like red kites, having never seen one but liking their need to decorate their nests. How cool is that!

It is isn’t it?! I might start leaving out shiny stuff to see if they take it.

I really sank into the peace and spirit of this poem, Rae. I’ve never seen a red kite but I feel like you’ve captured a bit of their essence and transferred it to me. A real gift of a poem. Thank you! Lovely, peaceful way to start my day before I go out into nature (to the river to see the beavers) which is where I find my peace these days. Big love to you from Alaska. 💚🌱🌲🌿🦫
